Educators and scientists alike acknowledge the shortage of minorities pursuing science careers. To address this problem, West Virginia University (WVU) has created the Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA), which reaches out to underrepresented students in grades 8 through 12, helps them get into college, and encourages them to pursue health care careers. The program brings African American, other minority, and disadvantaged students and their teachers to the WVU campus each summer for clinical, laboratory, and classroom training and enrichment activities.
