IMAGINE: What are some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best one.
PLAN: Draw a diagram. Make lists of materials you will need.
CREATE: Follow your plan and create something. Test it out!
IMPROVE: What works? What doesn't? What could work better? Modify your design to make it better. Test it out!

I created a bracelet with the 5 steps outlined. I recently taught a STEM camp at a college and we emphasized the importance of doing and understanding the steps. I also match things with an acronym and I did the same for the engineering design process.

After much training on NGSS, I think if we focus on the basic vocabulary and teach how to use analytical skills, then the students should succeed with the ACT testing. From what I know on the ACT, it is alot of data driven analytical information. Can the students correctly examine a chart/graph to pull needed information, etc.
