The lesson included in this article comprises three activities: a predict-share-observe-explain (PSOE) sequence of instruction that exposed students’ conceptions and engages them about heat transfer; provides an investigation into convection; and includes a whole-class follow-up discussion of kinetic and thermal energy deepen understanding. All aspects of this sequence of steps are provided in this article as well as help for setting up meaningful demonstrations. The author of this article feels that the PSOE and exploration–explanation sequences help most students provide lasting and meaningful knowledge of the concept because it involves student ideas, collaboration and firsthand observations and experiences.

In an effort to help middle school students understand the concept of heat transfer, the author developed a lesson that is comprised of three activities: a predict-share-observe-explain (PSOE) sequence of instruction that elicits students’ conceptions and increases their interest in learning about heat transfer; an investigation into convection; and a follow-up, whole class discussion of kinetic and thermal energy. In each activity, each step is clearly directed and explained. Charts showing pre- and post- conceptions of heat transfer and the post conceptions of the direction that heat transfers are included. In his conclusion, Brown references to his use of the PSOE technique/strategy to help develop his students learning new science content.
