Everyone loves to play games. This author describes a game she calls “Secrets”. This game requires students to formulate relationships between pairs of concepts with the goal to presenting a sentence about a specific concept. The author provides an example of how she does this. She also describes a game she calls “Pairs and Opposites” that she uses at the end of a unit to gauge students understanding of concepts before they are tested. These games are easy to construct and would be a great formative assessment of student’s knowledge acquisition.

Three games are presented that help students make connections between vocabulary and abstract science concepts. The first game is called ‘Secrets.’ It is similar to the magnetic poetry words. Words randomly arranged need be placed in the correct order to reveal a new fact about what is being studied. ‘Connections’, the second game, requires students to form relationships between pairs of concepts. The last game is called ‘Pairs of Operations’. I think this is a great short article. The author describes how the games are played and provides an example of each.
