While the CERES S'COOL program is intended for middle school and elementary school classes, this citizen science program would be a great addition for a high school Earth Science class as well. We start our year by learning about how the Earth system is monitored by satellites and how that information is used to explain complicated surface and atmospheric processes. It is only natural to also incorporate ground truthing to ensure what the satellites are detecting is actually occurring. By following our mapping unit with a meteorology unit, we could easily participate in this program.

S’COOL is a hand’s on project that engages students in real-time research, using technology, and contributing to NASA’s research on the Earth’s climate. Students learn about clouds and use their knowledge to contribute to research data while solving a problem based scenario designed by the teacher. All the steps needed to accomplish these tasks are provided and the reader is guided in ways to both access this information online and engage the students to create useful data and solve a problem.
