As a student teacher that was assigned to teach a lesson on push and pull, this article was helpful! Firstly, because the author elaborates on children's misconceptions around the word force. Since this was pointed out in the article, it brought awareness to areas in my lesson I will have to be mindful of when explaining to my students. Another aspect I liked was the formative assessment probe. In the past I was only encouraged to assess students through worksheets and I think informal ways are just as important. The probing assessment is just one more way for me to gauge where everyone is in the class. Overall, a very helpful article!

As a student teacher preparing a science unit, I found this article to be extremely helpful. It provided me with great knowledge and examples on how to introduce the concept of force. I am now aware of the complexity of this term and the misconceptions students may have. I especially liked how the author provided strategies that will help me to unlock my student's prior knowledge. This will allow me to address any misconceptions as I teach. I also enjoyed reading about the formative assessment probes. I realized that I can learn a great deal of information about my student's ideas in relation to the Core Ideas by using such assessments. This article has given me the knowledge and confidence to teach about forces. I intend to use this information as i prepare my science unit.

This article was great to read, especially as an upcoming teacher, because it gave me insight into how to teach the concept of force. I enjoyed the idea's the author gave for uncovering students' preconceptions about forces and the probes used to do so. I will be teaching about forces to a group of kindergarten students, and this article helped me to think about probes I can use to figure out what my students already know about pushes and pulls and forces in general. I can shape my lessons around the preconceptions that my students already have about forces. In using this type of formative assessment I can plan future lessons to meet the needs of my students.

I really enjoyed reading this piece. I felt that it gave me great insight into the misconceptions that my students might have before I start teaching about push and pull. I also appreciated the ideas for how to assess students' prior knowledge. This will be really helpful in figuring out where to go next with lessons. I am really grateful to have this information before teaching about a topic that is difficult from many young students to understand. Thank you!

Expanding students understanding of a force in the physical world must include an understanding that objects push and pull each other when they collide or are connected. Analyzing the results of the formative assessment probe called “Talking about Forces” helps guide the direction the teacher needs to proceed with the concept of forces to make sure that any misconceptions are eliminated.

This article not only provides us with a probe that teachers can use to identify student preconceptions, but it shares with teachers the most frequent preconceptios. A friendly talk probe called " Talking About Forces" can be used to get at students' thnking. Using a probe like this a teacher can make an intentional instructional plan to meet the needs of the students. The work of Page Keeley is well worth reading. I highly respect her idea around science.
