Hi,
Incorporate digital weather stations and graphing of temperature, rainfall and maybe even wind on a spreadsheet. You will be able to graph temperature changes and see averages. Measure the growth of plants in different conditions as well. Same plant in a shady spot and a sunny spot. Graph it using a line graph and see which conditions are best for it.

For a rock/earth unit I did a study on sand and where sand featured in the rock cycle. I had to collect different types of sand from different places (I am an international teacher so my kids collect it when they go on holidays to all sorts of exotic destinations). Hi,
For a food chain activity I printed out a lot of pictures of animals and plants in a biome (eg Grassland) Grass etc. I would then order them in the room on a wall from the sun at the bottom sending energy to the plants. Then I would figure out all the animals that eat the plants an put them in the next layer. then the things that eat them and so on till I get to the apex predators. I change...
