My NSTA / Peers / Elizabeth Cooke

I teach Literacy through Science to all of the classes at my school. I also founded a Junior First Lego League team at my school. I assisted in leveling FOSS books for my school district. I am an active member of the California Science Teachers Association where I assist on both the Legislative Committee and the Next Generation Science Standards Committee. I have also participated in the Stakeholders meetings for California Academic Assessment and Student Performance CAASP. I have taught science and engineering practices to middle school girls as a volunteer for the community service organization that I am involved in, Links, Inc. and I volunteer with Black Girls Code.

I tried the UV Detector activity with my 1st through 5th grade students. They enjoyed seeing the difference between the tonic water and tap water in the sunlight. They were able to see how the quinine absorbs light energy and reflects energy.

Translating the NGSS for Classroom Instruction is an excellent resource because it demystifies the Next Generation Science Standards by breaking it down into understandable sections. The Author uses clear easy to follow language and gives practical examples to illustrate each aspect of the standards. I would recommend this book to individual teachers and to be used as a part of staff development.

This is a great resource. KLEWS is a revised version of the KLW chart. It is an interactive approach to eliciting prior knowledge, building on science concepts and vocabulary. I have started implementing this in my classroom.

A Week For Space is an excellent resource because it provides a model for creating a school wide unit on the Earth Sun Moon connection and beyond. The units described offer a springboard for more detailed lessons.
