I do a lab using phenolphthalein in test tubes. You blow into the water with the phenolphthalein to get it slightly acidic (pink) and then place Elodea into the tubes and let it photosynthesize. The water turns from pink back to yellow, and if you block part of the tube (mine was sitting in a rack so the bottom was inadvertently blocked) part will be pink and part will be yellow....

Is there a reason they have to memorize the ions? I know that knowing some ions based on groups (eg Halogens form -1) is good to know, but I give my students a common ions chart that they can use any time they want (including tests).

I use a safety contract that I got from NSTA a few years ago- I can't find it on the site now and I can't seem to attach it. There are others on most of the science supply sites as well (Wards, Flinn, etc...) I do now allow students to participate in labs until I have it signed by parents.
