Over the last century, the eagle is not the only animal nearly brought to extinction at the hand of humans. This activity, though it focuses on the bald eagle, could be effectively utilized to understand life cycles, food webs, and habitat of any number of rare species. The activity does a nice job of keeping students thinking and journaling over most of a school year. Students are given an assignment to figure out what happened to the bald eagle based on a set of clues. Through a process of guided inquiry, young students are introduced to the real process of science. I might be tempted to use this activity in a slightly modified manner at the middle school level, but provide each student group a different species and different set of clues, with the eventual outcome being a deeper understanding of human impact on both biotic and abiotic factors in the target species; I would also want the students to understand what issues there are in the reintroduction of the species.
