The National Wildlife Foundation (NWF) hosts the Cool School Challenge, a school-based carbon reduction program developed and administered for six years by the Puget Sound (Washington) Clean Air Agency. The challenge has been incorporated into NWF's Eco-Schools USA program and aligned so that schools completing the Challenge automatically qualify for a bronze level award through Eco-Schools USA. The Cool School Challenge engages students and teachers in practical strategies to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions school-wide, making use of a carbon calculator and other tools to first determine a school’s footprint. Lexus and Scholastic Launch Sixth Annual Environmental Contest for Middle and High School Students http://foundationcenter.org/pnd/rfp/rfp_item.jhtml?id=394200017 Lexus and Scholastic Launch Sixth Annual Environmental Contest is open to students in grades 6-12 who are either registered and home-schooled or enrolled in a public or accredited private school, and who are legal residents of the U.S. or the District of Columbia. Teams of students can enter if they are part of an afterschool science or environmental club, but the challenge is not open to clubs outside of school. Middle and high school teams comprised of five to ten students and a teacher-advisor are invited to participate in one or both of the two initial challenges, each addressing different environmental elements — land/water and air/climate. For each of the challenges, teams define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report the results. The SPARK Resource Challenge. The SPARK Resource Challenge will kick off on November 1st, 2012 and run through January 13th, 2013 at Midnight. The contest will not be viewable on the home page until November 1st. On that day, you will be able to go to the home page of the SPARK Community and enter to win. For each resource you contribute to SPARK, you will be entered into a drawing to win. Environmental Education Grants The purpose of the Environmental Education Grants Program is to provide money to support environmental education projects that increase the public's awareness about environmental issues and provide them with the skills to take responsible actions to protect the environment. This grant program funds environmental education (EE) projects. Environmental information and outreach may be important elements of EE projects, but these activities by themselves are not environmental education. By itself, environmental information only addresses awareness and knowledge, usually about a particular environmental issue. Outreach involves information dissemination and requests or suggestions for action on a particular issue (often without the critical thinking, problem solving and decision making steps in between). Volvo Adventure competition http://www.volvoadventure.org/home.aspx Submission deadline: January 31, 2013 The competition is open to young people around the world between 13 and 16 years of age. Teams must consist of between two to five young people with one adult as supervisor. Projects can focus on any environmental subject that young people have found interesting and will be published on the Volvo Adventure website, where the best projects are selected for the international final, which is an all-expenses-paid trip to Sweden.

Thank you for such an awesome thread!! I know that there are TONS of grants out there but unless you know avenues in which to search, it can be like going in circles! I really appreciate everyone sharing their resources and links to these great opportunities! Thank you again! I've only applied for one grant in my 14 years of teaching only because I "ran into it". Another teacher from another school submitted my name as a referral (as the grant was searching to represent an array of schools around the Hawaiian Islands). I got lucky! With this grant, I was able to get 30 laptops for classroom use. I gave half of them to my colleague (also science) so that we could at least target ALL of the 7th graders in our school. This was a STEM grant that is no longer available (as the grant was not renewed) but I am ever so grateful for those of you who are contributing to this thread! It really is valuable for people like me!

Rochelle, Thank you for sharing your experience with your first grant project. it encourages teachers to look around them and to find a grant and to actually write for one. I know how hard it is to find the time and the inclination to complete grant applications; I really struggled with my first one. But even if you do not win on the first go around, the experience gained is fantastic and set you up to resubmit for the same proposal or to write for another one. I don't know the actual statistics but as a reader of grants, I know that many winners are those who try for the second or third rounds. Way to go, Rochelle! Many studies point to the under-representation of minorities in the sciences. The Community Interactions Grant supports ACS Student Chapter projects and interactions that help improve the science learning experience of African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino and Pacific Islander students, as well as economically disadvantaged students, in grades K-12. This time of year on the island of Maui at least, and possibly other islands, Monsanto makes a science grant available for secondary science teachers.
